The Kansas City Royals are heading into a very important series against the Cleveland Indians this weekend. While the division is within reach, this series could very well make or break the Royals’ chances at winning the Central.

The 2017 season hasn’t gone according to plan so far for the Kansas City Royals, but even despite their recent struggles, the boys in blue are still in the running for the American League Central division title. Right now, the Royals are five and a half games out of first place, which isn’t insurmountable by any means.

This series, however, is going to be a huge decider in if the Royals can truly win the division or if they’ll have to settle for a Wild Card berth instead. This series will consist of three games and the Royals must take two of three in order to stay close to Cleveland in the division race.

If the Royals get swept by the Tribe in this series, then their chances of winning the division will be caput and they’ll instead be looking for one of those two Wild Card spots. Getting swept would put the Royals eight games back in the division, so while no they wouldn’t officially be eliminated, it’d be a long shot to bet on them to win the Central so many games behind.

More from Kansas City Royals

Things haven’t been well for the Kansas City Royals this year, but they’ve hung in there. The Indians haven’t been wowing the critics all that much either, but there’s no debate in which team is better: it’s Cleveland.

The Indians are looking to defend their American League pennant from a season ago and are hoping to get back to the World Series in2017. The Royals just don’t appear to have that same drive.

When Cleveland added Jay Bruce to their ranks, it was seemingly a nail in any other Central team’s chance at competing with them for the division. They made that move when Salvador Perez went on the disabled list and to Royals fans, that signified that Cleveland knew the division was theirs for the taking now.

It’s been disappointing watching the Royals play mediocre baseball these last few weeks, but hopefully they can go out and sweep the Tribe this weekend and still be in contention for that division title. Sweeping Cleveland would put them only two games out and then they’d see the Indians again next weekend for another crucial series.

What do you think, Royals fans? Does Kansas City have a good chance in this series or could this be the final dagger in their hopes for winning the American League Central?
