Alex Smith – Quarterback

We kick this off with the man who will helm the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. Despite what many are hoping for, that man is still Alex Smith. Pending a major, and unforeseen, development, Smith is the starting quarterback for the Chiefs this season. So you’ll just have to get used to that idea.

Of course, it really shouldn’t be that difficult to accept Alex Smith as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs. Since Smith’s arrival to KC, the team hasn’t had a single losing season, they won their first playoff game since the 90s, and even took the AFC West last year. On most resumes, that would be considered “not too shabby”.

I won’t sit here and try to convince you Alex Smith is a top level quarterback. He isn’t…or at least he hasn’t been to this point in his career. However, if there were ever an opportunity for Smith to take his game to the next level, this would certainly be the year.

Alex Smith is the starter for now, but he’s on borrowed time and knows it. Smith has at least one more contract ahead of him in his career, and he’s playing for it right now. Players in contract years tend to put out more than they normally do. The Chiefs could certainly use that from Smith in 2017, and he could use it for his own future financial security.

Prediction

There is very little doubt that Alex Smith will retain the starting job this year. There are some who think he’ll be replaced by midseason, but they’re largely basing that on fantasy football projections, which are useless in real life. Smith won’t be a juggernaut by any means, but I do expect him to have a solid season with some personal best marks.
