Does Patrick Mahomes Take #2 Job?

It should be expected that the progress of new Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be a topic all year long. I’ve gone over this quite a bit, but there is no quarterback controversy in Kansas City. That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to watch for though. The immediate task for Mahomes is to beat out Tyler Bray for the #2 spot.

So far this offseason, the Chiefs have been sticking to their script. Not only have they shown no signs of even considering Patrick Mahomes as the starter yet, but he also hasn’t won the backup job either. That is actually something of a good sign because it means they aren’t just handing him anything. He’s got to earn it.

Of course, that’s not really what fans want to hear. With the Chiefs investing a pair of first round picks (and a third round pick) in Mahomes, there is pressure to move him along quickly. However, the Chiefs have insisted that they are doing this slowly.

The Chiefs are rolling with Alex Smith and will do so until there is a real reason to not have him out there. However, that won’t stop the national pundits from pushing the story. Few things sell in sports media like a quarterback controversy. So expect to hear a lot about Patrick Mahomes this year, much of it in a negative context.
