MOST DISAPPOINTING CHIEFS IN 2016 – NUMBER 9: PHILLIP GAINES

Maybe I was the only one who had high hopes for Phillip Gaines headed into year three of his NFL career, but I was sorely disappointed with the lack of progress the Rice cornerback showed.

A casual Chiefs fan probably only knew who Gaines was during the first match-up against the Broncos when he got roasted by Trevor Siemian. That game saw Siemian picking on Gaines and getting big yardage as a result.

With guys like Terrance Mitchell and Steven Nelson stepping up and showing they could actually cover receivers, there might not really be a place for Gaines on this team come next season.

He only started five games, though he appeared in 13 total, and he tends to get bitten by the injury bug a lot too. That’s never good for a soon-to-be 26-year old cornerback, who the team used a third-round pick on just three years ago.

I expected more from year three of Phillip Gaines and he didn’t deliver at all. He had seven defended passes, two forced fumbles, and one interception, but was also publicly humiliated on national television in week 12.

That might be punishment enough.
