Potential September Call-Ups – Number 2: Jason Vargas

Jason Vargas still exists, I swear (unlike Mike Minor, who I am beginning to think is a made up person to get our hopes up), and he’ll hopefully be returning to the roster in a week or so.

If Vargas doesn’t pitch at all this season, the boys in blue will save around $6 million. That very well could be the difference maker for if Vargas sees the mound or not this year.

Vargas exited a game against the Pirates last season and later had to get Tommy John surgery. He would miss an entire year.

Prior to the surgery, Vargas had a nice career with the Royals. Between two seasons with the Royals, Vargas had an average of 3.76 ERA and has a 16-12 record. He was on his way to a really nice year with Kansas City last season, but the injury derailed his season and he’s yet to return to the mound.

The thing to keep an eye on with Vargas, however, is the insurance policy that the Royals have on him. If Vargas doesn’t pitch at all this season, the boys in blue will save around $6 million. That very well could be the difference maker for if Vargas sees the mound or not this year, but you’d have to think that the Royals would want to get him out there and throwing from at least the bullpen.
