Most Disappointing Royals So Far – Number 4: Omar Infante

This one could fall under the same category as Colon and Young, but I feel like the expectations for Omar Infante were a little higher this season given that he was hurt for a large portion of the 2015 season.

  • Omar Infante was brought to Kansas City in the 2014 season to man second base. He was given a pretty hefty contract and has not lived up to it in the least bit during his time in Kansas City.

Through 31 games this season (113 at bats), Infante is batting .239/.269/.301. That compares to his weak averages of .220/.234/.318 in all of 2015.

Max Rieper over at Royals Review is tired of the Omar Infante Show in Kansas City, and says that it’s time to part ways with the long time major leaguer.

    Riper states,

"Since the start of the 2014 season, no qualified hitter in baseball has a worse OPS than Omar Infante’s .594, according to Fangraphs. Many of the other players near him are known either for their tremendous speed (Billy Hamilton) or defense (Andrelton Simmons). Omar Infante has neither. His defense was solid enough to keep him from being below replacement level in 2014, his first season with Kansas City. But his defensive dropped off last year and his limitations this year have caused Manager Ned Yost to bench him more."

I can’t say that I disagree with Rieper’s sentiments. Infante has not been worthy of the contract that the Royals gave him, and that money is likely why he’s still on the team. Any other guy performing at this level for several seasons would have been cut by now.
