Most Disappointing Royals So Far – Number 5: Yordano Ventura

Oh, Yordano Ventura.

Since his journey with the Royals began in 2008, Ventura has had that “ace” label painted all over him. Many thought that when he came up to the big leagues at the end of the 2013 season, that this would be the beginning of the “Ace Ventura” era in Kansas City.

The jury is still out on whether or not Yordano Ventura can be that ace in Kansas City, but it almost seems like fans are tired of waiting for it.

Instead, Ventura hasn’t been that guy.

He had a decent season in 2014, but regressed quite a bit last season, and has looked pretty shaky so far in the 2016 season.

As of May 20th, Ventura has an ERA of 4.85 in eight games with a 4-2 record. He’s pitched in 42.2 innings and has already allowed 29 walks during that time.

The jury is still out on whether or not Yordano Ventura can be that ace in Kansas City, but it almost seems like fans are tired of waiting for it. We’ll see flashes of how great Ventura can be at times (Game 6 of the 2014 World Series, anyone?), but other times, Ventura will struggle early on and be out of the game after just five innings and allowing four or five runs.

I believe Yordano Ventura can be a dominant starting pitcher in the major leagues. He’s shown that he has that capability. He needs to start showing that in nearly every outing now though because the fans are getting tired of “Ace Ventura” not living up to his name.

Next: Well... Not too surprising
