Honorable Mention for Best Season in Kansas City Chiefs History – 2013 (11-5; Lost in Wild Card Round)

After going 2-14 in 2012, the Kansas City Chiefs were the laughing stock of the NFL. They quickly threw out anything rotten from that season, by firing their general manager and head coach. They also released their quarterback.

The Chiefs went into rebuilding mode after 2012’s disappointing season that left fans more than pissed off. In to town came new general manager John Dorsey, who had quite the resume working with the Green Bay Packers; new head coach Andy Reid, who had just been fired from Philadelphia after 14 seasons there; and quarterback Alex Smith, whom the team traded a second round pick to San Francisco for.

Critics were on the Chiefs because they didn’t play a tough schedule and faced a lot of backup quarterbacks, but the team did something difficult by turning around an awful team and going on to be a playoff contender.

The Kansas City Chiefs had their core group in town, and now it was time to go out and redeem themselves.

Most of the time after being the first overall pick the season prior, teams struggle to get anything done in the next year. They win a few more games, but are still one of the lower teams on the totem pole.

That didn’t happen to Kansas City in 2013, as they started the season 9-0. Critics were on the Chiefs because they didn’t play a tough schedule and faced a lot of backup quarterbacks, but the team did something difficult by turning around an awful team and going on to be a playoff contender.

Once the Chiefs hit the rough patch of their schedule, however, things went downhill fast. They finished the season 2-5 and earned a five-seed in the playoffs with an 11-5 record.

Now the playoff game alone would have many counting this season out of the best Chiefs’ seasons, as they blew a 28-point lead to the Colts. What made this season so much fun was the fact that the team came back from the worst season in franchise history, and did the unthinkable – They became relevant.

Andy Reid showed he belonged in Kansas City, and this began the wonderful relationship between him and Chiefs fans.
