The Bad

Gallardo comes with the same big downfall that Ian Kennedy does. He’s tied to a qualifying offer which means the Royals would sacrifice their first draft pick if they sign him.

More from Kansas City Royals

The Royals don’t pick until the 24th spot, so they’re not giving up a top 15 prospect, but more and more value is being placed on the importance of strong drafts. The Royals likely wouldn’t be wearing the crown if not for strong drafts over the last several years.

Gallardo, also likely comes at a fairly high price tag. Signing Gallardo to the type of deal he likely demands, could cause financial flexibility issues for the Royals in coming years. He’d likely retain enough value to trade away should a long term contract come to fruition, but it’s still a gamble.

Gallardo has seen his velocity decrease in recent years and his strikeout rate did drop off considerably compared to his career norms. He’ll have to keep adapting to become more crafty as innings continue to wear on his arm. There’s always a chance he doesn’t adapt quickly and that could be disastrous for the Royals, who are likely looking for a steady starter who can eat up innings.
