There are plenty of options out there still for the Royals to go after, but the one that was floating around for awhile was the possibility of James Shields returning to Kansas City.

Shields came to Kansas City before the 2013 season in a trade that boded well for the Royals (it also brought Wade Davis to KC and we all know how well that’s turned out).

More from Kansas City Royals

Shields guided Kansas City to consecutive winning seasons and helped them make it to the playoffs in 2014. He didn’t pitch too well during the playoffs, but he got the Royals there, and that’s something fans won’t forget.

It just seemed obvious that as the World Series and magical postseason run was coming to a close, that Shields would be on his way out of KC. Fans came to terms with that and watched as the San Diego Padres signed Shields to a hefty contract during the off season. It was sad, but we all knew it was going to happen.

Despite having an 8-4 record with a 3.77 ERA in 22 starts, the Padres aren’t happy with Shields and have made it vocal that they’re wanting to move the former Royal.

As cool as it would be to have Shields back in blue, I’m not a fan of picking up that four-year $75 million deal that he signed with San Diego. It might not be a good idea to sign up for the Shields Express when he’ll turn 34 in December and is starting to show signs of regression with the Padres.

Don’t get me wrong, I love James Shields, and respect what he did for this organization during his two tenure in Kansas City, but he’s too expensive.

Pass.
