Edinson Volquez has easily been the Royals’ best pitcher thus far and I don’t even feel like it’s a close choice. Sure, Chris Young has been phenomenal, but he’s had less starts and had two questionable games. Volquez has had one bad start in his 14 outings and that was due to a blister on his hand.

Volquez isn’t James Shields, and Royals fans know that. What Volquez is, though, is an affordable option who still puts the Royals in a position to win every time he takes the mound.

With a 3.33 ERA and 7-4 record in 14 starts, Edinson Volquez has given Royals fans confidence every time he is slated to start. He has gone five plus innings in all but one start (that bad one I mentioned above) and has gone six or more innings in seven games. To put that into perspective, Edinson Volquez has given the Royals more than six innings in over half of his starts so far this season.

I recently ranked the Royals’ starting pitchers and put Volquez at one. I mentioned in that article that if the KC Royals were in a one-game Wildcard playoff game, I’d want Edinson Volquez out there on the mound for the boys in blue. He’s been that good.

Next: Billy who?
