Kansas City Chiefs are not a popular team to cheer for

The Kansas City Chiefs tend to be forgotten about in the National Football League. Part of this could be because Kansas City is one of the smaller cities in the league, but the Chiefs also aren’t flashy enough to grab people’s attention.

On Tuesday, 610 Sports Radio aired a segment in the 7:00 AM hour in which they interviewed kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Independence. The interview was brought on when the kids toured the 610 studio and the hosts asked how many were Kansas City Chiefs fans. Apparently, only a few kids raised their hands.

This brought on the hosts interviewing those who weren’t Chiefs fans and getting answers as to why not. The guys on 610 seemed legitimately shocked that the kids weren’t fans of the KC Chiefs, but personally, I’m not.

Sports are a different culture now, especially with kids. While people my age and older stick with the team(s) they grew up rooting for, kids now are all about winning and postseason success. The Kansas City Chiefs might be winning in the regular season, at least they have been in the recent years, but when was the last time they won anything big?

Our football team is boring and nobody cares about them except for us.

The fact that the Chiefs haven’t been to a Super Bowl since 1969 and have had minimal success in the playoffs is reason enough for kids not to want to latch onto them. People my age grew up with the dominant Chiefs from the 1990s, while the kids today grew up watching the lackluster Brodie Croyle-led Kansas City Chiefs. Would you want to stay a fan of that franchise if you had the option not to?

The reason why I’m still a fan of the Chiefs is simply because I grew up watching them and can’t just abandon them. No matter how much I want to at times (see 2012 season), I can’t give up on my childhood team.

I’m aware the Chiefs haven’t won anything in my lifetime and I’m waiting until the day when they do, so that I can sit back and say, “That was really worth the wait!” (i.e., the Royals, who we’ll get to in a bit). That’s how most people my age are. We’re a loyal group and we want to support our team from our childhood.

Kids are impatient. They don’t want to wait around for championships and certainly don’t want to do so if the team is boring to watch.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The kids interviewed, for the most part, said their favorite NFL team was one of the perennial winners in the league today. Those include the Packers, Patriots, and Steelers. One kid said he was a Raiders fan, which isn’t shocking either, considering they’re a rival to the Chiefs, a team on the rise, and have a flashy offense.

That’s another knock on the Chiefs. Their offense just isn’t electric enough to get kids excited about cheering for them. Alex Smith, who plays the most important position in the sport, isn’t the type of player that kids are going to clamor for. He’s a quiet guy and his style of play is boring.

The Kansas City Royals are the opposite of this. For one, they’re proven winners, going to back-to-back World Series in 2014 and 2015 and winning the whole thing in 2015. Also, the players are likable and fun to watch. People can relate to them and really root for them to succeed.

Perhaps guys like Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and eventually Patrick Mahomes can get kids excited about the KC Chiefs, but in the mean time, we all just have to face the facts. Our football team is boring and nobody cares about them except for us.

Until the Kansas City Chiefs can go the distance in the postseason and make it to/win a Super Bowl, people aren’t going to give two craps about this football team. Time to buck the trend here.
