A lot of Kansas City Chiefs fans are still in shock over the release of Jeremy Maclin last week. If the Chiefs signed Eric Decker to their roster, this offseason wouldn’t seem nearly as depressing.

The Kansas City Chiefs likely let Jeremy Maclin go due to salary cap issues, but now they’re in need of a number one wide receiver. Adding a guy like Eric Decker could be a good idea for the Chiefs, though he’s a similar type player as Maclin.

Decker, drafted by the Broncos in the third round in the 2010 NFL Draft, played second fiddle to Demaryius Thomas in Denver. After his contract was up, the Jets swooped in and inked Decker to a deal. He again was second in line and has never really been the number one guy anywhere that he’s played.

The Jets announced they’d be releasing Decker this week and he’ll become a hot name in free agency, alongside Maclin. In seven years in the league, Decker had three 1,000 yard seasons, with his most recent one coming in 2015 with the Jets.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Last season was a bit of a drop-off for the former Minnesota Gopher, as he only played in three games and caught nine passes for 194 yards with two touchdowns before getting injured and missing the rest of the season.

While signing Eric Decker seems like a great move, it won’t happen. The Chiefs let go of Maclin despite needing his services, so they’re obviously not feeling too pressed in the receiver department . They also signed a guy named Tevin Jones, which is probably their “counter” to the Maclin news.

Eric Decker has had success against the Chiefs in the past, as he spent several years playing against them while a member of the Broncos. In 2013, he torched Marcus Cooper in the secondary and went off for four touchdowns at Arrowhead. When healthy, he’s a great receiver, but if the Chiefs didn’t want Maclin, they probably won’t dish out cash for Decker.

When looking at the Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver depth chart, a lot of people will turn to Tyreek Hill to become the new number one option. There’s also Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, and rookie Jehu Chesson. I don’t feel confident with any of those options, but the Chiefs have never been a team known for their standout receivers.

Hey, we can all dream though. Eric Decker coming to Kansas City would be fun and would make us all less sad about the release of Jeremy Maclin. Also, side note, Decker did appear on an episode of Catching Kelce meaning him and Travis Kelce are buddies. Not sure that necessarily means anything, but worth noting.
