ESPN’s Todd McShay released his first mock draft yesterday, and it sent UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky to the Kansas City Chiefs. Could the Chiefs take a quarterback in 2017?

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to stymie draft experts when it comes to the 2017 NFL Draft. So far, most of the projected picks have focused on the defensive side of the ball for KC. That makes sense as there has been a level of uncertainty this year around a number of defensive stars for the team. However, Todd McShay threw a change up by projecting UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky to the Chiefs.

While not everyone agrees with his picks, it is generally accepted that “mock draft season” begins when Todd McShay drops his first predictions. From here, fans will be blasted with a relentless stream of mock drafts that overreact to every single development you can imagine. As the season draws to an end, and more and more teams are eliminated, these mock drafts get more intense.

McShay isn’t the first to send a quarterback to the Chiefs. However, as this is the start of mock draft season, it is a good opportunity to talk about KC’s options at the position. The Chiefs have found a lot of stability with Alex Smith at the helm. However, there is some question as to whether or not Smith is the long-term answer at the position.

I have argued for a while now that the Chiefs are sticking with Alex Smith until a better option presents itself. With Smith’s contract being up after the 2018 season, it would make sense for KC to be looking at quarterbacks now. So which options are worth pursuing in the 2017 NFL Draft? I’ll break it down here…
