 DeShone Kizer – Notre Dame

If the Kansas City Chiefs are going for a quarterback in 2017, I fully support them going after the best available. In the eyes of some analysts and pundits, the best quarterback in the upcoming class is Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer. I myself don’t necessarily agree with that assessment, but Kizer is a quality prospect who has caught my eye.

There is a lot to like about DeShone Kizer. He is a big, athletic, player with a very live arm that can make all of the throws on the field. He shows good velocity and timing with his throws and has decent accuracy. Kizer also possesses an advantage that many quarterbacks aren’t given. He has alternated heavily between zone-read and pocket passer techniques. That kind of versatility of systems is very rare.

The knocks  on DeShone Kizer largely stem from his youth. He still has some developing to do as a quarterback, but that is a largely mitigated risk for a team that already has a reliable starter. Kizer tends to get rushed at times and will lose his mechanics. That affects his velocity and accuracy, allowing opposing defenses an advantage.

There are some who believe DeShone Kizer should have returned to school for one more year. I disagree as I think he is better served by spending a year on the bench with NFL coaching. He has the basic tools and traits that teams look for, so why shouldn’t that be where he develops?

My Verdict: A solid prospect who is best served by sitting for a year or two behind an established veteran. This might be ideal for the Chiefs.
