Kansas City Chiefs VS Seattle Seahawks: Last Time They Met

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs look to host what could be the biggest game of the season for them in 2014 when the Seattle Seahawks come to town on Sunday. This match will pit two teams against each other that are used to having loud fans pump up their defenses. Luckily, the Chiefs get the edge this time.

These two teams used to play all the time, as they were both members of the same division. When Houston got the Texans, divisions and conferences in the league were shuffled and Seattle got moved to the NFC West.

A lot of other things have changed with these two teams too since then. For instance, the Seahawks drafted some stellar football players in Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman, and Byron Maxwell who have all gone on to help the Seahawks tremendously. Josh Michaels covered some of the most notable games between these two teams over the years, which you can read right here.

The most notable accomplishment for the Seahawks since the last Seattle/KC matchup is that Seattle blew out the Denver Broncos in the most recent Super Bowl. While it’s safe to say that every Chiefs fan was rooting for Seattle that night, none of us will be rooting for them to play well on Sunday.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Last time these two teams met was on November 28th, 2010 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. The Chiefs had a 6-4 record while the Seahawks posted a 5-5 record. Matt Cassel was the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs while veteran Matt Hasselbeck was starting under center for the Seattle Seahawks.

The Chiefs struck first with a seven yard touchdown pass from Cassel to Dwayne Bowe. Bowe went on to have three touchdowns on the day in what was a career year for both him and Cassel.

Seattle quickly tied things up in the quarter when Dustin Colquitt‘s punt was blocked and Earl Thomas returned it 10 yards for a Seahawks touchdown. The Chiefs went ahead 21-10 by half time though to hopefully secure their lead for the second half.

The second half started with the Seahawks holding the Chiefs scoreless in the third quarter and tacking on a touchdown of their own to make it 21-17. That was about the end of the suspense though, as the Kansas City Chiefs heated up in the fourth quarter. Jamaal Charles rushed for a score and Cassel had two touchdown passes to put the game away for good.

Say what you want about Matt Cassel, but he shined in this game for sure.

This game was one of Matt Cassel’s best as a Chief (or ever probably), as he went 22 for 32 for 233 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. Cassel also got to stick it to Pete Carroll, his coach at USC, and prove that he could indeed be a starting quarterback (Hold your jokes on this sentence, please).

I remember this game fondly. I was a sophomore in college and had gone home for the weekend to see my family. This was a 3:25 kickoff so I watched the first half before leaving to head back to Warrensburg (I hate driving on the highway in the dark). I made sure to listen to the game on 101.1 The Fox and was cursing a lot when the third quarter started and the Seahawks scored a touchdown in less than a minute.

By the time I rolled into town, the game seemed to be a pretty secure victory for Kansas City and they ended up earning their seventh win of the season. The 2010 season was pretty special in general for the Chiefs, as they won the AFC West with a 10-6 record and hosted their first playoff game since 2003.

Say what you want about Matt Cassel, but he shined in this game for sure. Same with Dwayne Bowe, who had three touchdowns on the day. I think we’d all kill for a performance like that from Bowe on Sunday against the present day Seahawks.
