The Kansas City Royals failed against against Madison Bumgarner, getting shut out in a dispiriting 5-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants in game 5 of the World Series. Giant now lead the Series 3 games to 2.

More from Kansas City Royals

Not only were the Royals shut out by Bumgarner, the Giants got to Kansas City’s vaunted bullpen aces Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis for 3 runs in the 8th inning to turn a tight, 2-0 game into a 5 run bulge.

Kansas City now faces 2 elimination games at Kauffman Stadium.

On the Mound

James Shields pitched well, but not good enough in what is likely to be his last start as a Kansas City Royal. Shields allowed 8 hits, 1 walk, and 2 earned runs with 4 strikeouts. Shields left the game after the 6th innings, trailing 2-0.

Kelvin Herrera entered in the 7th and pitched a scoreless inning despite allowing a 1-out walk.Herrera continued into the 8th, allowing 2 singles to start the inning. Herrera ended up getting charged with 2 eared runs on Juan Perez‘s bases clearing double off Wade Davis.

Wade Davis allowed a double and single which allowed the Giants to plate 3 runs in the 8th. So much for the Royals invulnerable HDH monster.

At the Plate

The Royals could not score a run against Bumgarner. Kansas City hitters managed a measly 4 singles with 0 walks and no earned runs on the night.

This and That

Madison Bumgarner continued his dominance in the World Series. He has allowed only 1 run in 4 World Series starts for his career.

Lorenzo Cain made yet another outstanding play in the 6th inning, running down a hard-hit ball toward the gap in right-center that is known as “triples alley” in AT&T Park. With runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, Cain’s play likely saved 2 runs to keep Kansas City in the game.

Bumgarner’s complete game shutout was the first in the World Series since Josh Beckett in 2003.

KC Kingdom Player of the Game

James Shields gets our nod. While Shields left the game trailing 2-0, he pitched well enough to keep the Royals in the game against Madison Bumgarner. Shields’ impact on the Royals goes beyond his numbers. He brought a winning attitude to the clubhouse that will linger long after even if he leaves in free agency this off season.

The Giants

Madison Bumgarner is the obvious choice. A complete-game shut out in the World Series is pretty much what every pitcher dreams about as a kid.
