THREE KEYS TO THE GAME

124. . Defense. Kansas City Chiefs. Pass Rush. 1. player

Where, oh where, has that relentless pass rush gone? In the first 7 games last year, the Chiefs recorded 35 sacks (Pro-Football-Reference.com). They only had 12 more the rest of the season on 6 of those came against the Washington Redskins.

The Chiefs do have 5 in their first two games this season, which is not a terrible number. The pass rushers just don’t seem to be getting consistent pressure on the quarterbacks. The secondary is too shaky to hold coverage for too long over the course of the game.

Tamba Hali and Justin Houston need to keep Ryan Tannehill under fire all game. Take him out of his comfort zone. Force him into mistakes.

Kansas city will not be successful if they can’t re-ignite their crazy pass rush.

player. 124. . . Kansas City Chiefs. Health. 2

While this is true for every NFL team, the Chiefs have already suffered a season’s worth of series injuries in the first couple of games and preseason. They need a game where they come out the other end relatively unscathed.

A quick return to health by Jamaal Charles would help the offense, as would finally getting De’Anthony Thomas on field. Knile Davis was terrific last week, and is a solid running back, but he is not the weapon Charles is.

Thomas has a shot at being a big play maker, but not if he can’t get on the field. There is a chance both play against the Dolphins. Let’s just hope they are healthy.

Eric Fisher. 3. player. 124. . LT. Kansas City Chiefs

The expectations of the first overall pick in a draft are always high. When that player has to replace a Pro Bowler, the pressure to perform can be even higher.

Eric Fisher looked much better to the naked eye over the first two games than he did most of last season. He still gets pushed back on occasion but he he made a couple of terrific bull dozing blocks against the Denver Broncos in week two.

The Miami Dolphins signed former Chief Branden Albert, and Eric Fisher has stepped into Albert’s shoes at left tackle.  Sean Keeler on Fox Sports Kansas City reports that Albert is far out performing Fisher this season, according to ProFootballFocus.com, despite what the naked eye sees.

Fisher just needs to worry about improving his game, and he should tune out voices from the outside who want to compare him to Brandon Albert. It might be difficult this week, having to stand on the sidelines and watch his former teammate, but if Fisher continues to make progress, he will be just fine.
