Former Missouri Tigers linebacker, Aldon Smith, has been at the brunt of negative attention lately and he kept that trend going when he was arrested in Los Angeles at LAX airport Sunday afternoon. The reports indicate that Smith had become “belligerent” when airport security selected him for a random screening at terminal 1 in the airport. Foxnews.com reports that,

"The 24-year-old Smith was randomly selected for a secondary screening at Terminal 1 and became uncooperative with the process, airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said. She said he told a TSA agent that he had a bomb before walking to the gate. When airport police officers caught up with him, Ortiz said Smith became uncooperative and was taken into custody."

First off, getting randomly checked is a huge pain but, it shouldn’t drive to the point to say you have a damn bomb in your luggage. I mean hasn’t he seen “Meet The Parents” when Ben Stiller gave his famous bomb rant on the plane? Obviously not, as he was booked for investigation of making a false bomb threat. Smith potentially faces felony charges for his actions, though no charges have been filed yet.

As mentioned before, this isn’t Smiths first run in with the law and counting this newest charge, he now has three pending criminal charges cases floating over his head. San Francisco 49ers GM, Trent Baalke released a statement following the news saying,

"“We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith,”  Baalke said. “As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment.”"

The story of Aldon Smith so far is one of tragedy, as he is truly one of the most dominating defensive players in the NFL right now. He was defensive player of the year in 2012 after recording 19.5 sacks that season and helping his team reach the Super Bowl.

Last year, Smith was arrested on 3 felony counts including illegal possession of an assault rifle from June of 2012 in which shots were fired at his home and Smith was stabbed during a party. He’s also been picked up on two different occasions for DUI’s and possession of Marijuana. He took a leave from the team following his September arrest last year, turning himself into a treatment facility. Smith returned to the team in November and things were starting to look up.

After this arrest, it’s hard to say where the 49ers heads are at on this, as he is one of the most feared pass rushers in the NFL right now but continues to be a distraction to the team. Depending on how his charges go, Smith’s days in the NFL could be numbered as teams won’t touch him until his legal record is cleared up.

As a Missouri fan, all I can do is shake my head, as more and more news breaks about the programs current and former players getting into trouble. The Tigers released Dorial Green-Beckham last Friday, as our staff writer Brian Barnett covered, and hearing about Smith’s added troubles on Sunday was frosting on the cake for a Missouri fans weekend.

Hopefully Smith can get his head straight before it’s too late, as he is still so young with so much potential.
