Quarterbacks for KC Chiefs to target in free agency: Brandon Allen

A younger option in free agency would be Brandon Allen, who spent 2020 with the Bengals. Allen saw a fair share of playing time when rookie Joe Burrow went down, starting five games and throwing for 925 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.

In Week 16 against the Texans, Allen balled out. He went 29-of-37 for 371 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-31 victory over Houston. I know the Texans were a dumpster fire last year, but Allen can play well and he showed it in that win.

The 2021 season will be Allen’s third year in the league and he could very well be with his third different team. If that’s the case, he could be a really nice backup option behind Mahomes.

Other options at quarterback for KC Chiefs

There’s a decent chance that the Chiefs end up sticking with Chad Henne as their backup or maybe even giving Matt Moore another chance (he spent 2020 on their practice squad). Henne did step in and play well when needed to and that run he had in the AFC Divisional Round is one we’ll all remember forever.

Should KC move on from Henne, however, the likeliest option is probably drafting someone on Day 3 of the draft and planning to have them back up Mahomes for the foreseeable future. This way, the team gets a cheap quarterback to have behind their expensive franchise quarterback. Obviously, this makes things trickier should Mahomes get injured, but it’s the most logical idea.
