KC Chiefs: Jacksonville Jaguars are now the best fit for Eric Bieniemy

Ah, but not everything can be straightforward. There must always be a roadblock, and the roadblock to Eric Bieniemy getting the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars has a name.

Urban Meyer.

Yes, Urban Meyer, the former college head coach who won national titles with the Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes, and before that, turned in amazing seasons while leading Bowling Green and Utah.

Recently, rumors have popped up that the Jaguars are smitten with the idea of creating the duo of Trevor Lawrence and Urban Meyer. Granted, that would get fans in the stands (once that’s again a thing).

But it seems odd that Khan would opt for a head coach with no professional experience who flames out at every stop he makes and hasn’t been on the sideline since 2018 over a guy who’s helped guide the most explosive offense the NFL has witnessed the past three seasons and who’s won a Super Bowl.

Sure, Meyer is a heck of a coach. For his career, he went 187-32 over 17 seasons. That’s incredible. He won two BCS Championships with Florida before winning a College Football Championship with Ohio State. In two seasons with Bowling Green, the Falcons went 17-6. Under Urban, Utah went 12-0 in 2006 and turned Alex Smith into a No. 1 pick in 2005.

The dude’s a winner, but he’s also got some skeletons in his closet (see, Hernandez, Aaron, and Smith, Zach.) Also, his tenures at Florida and Ohio State ended due to medical reasons closely associated with the stress of the jobs. The losses, the few that there were, took a mighty toll.

Unfortunately for Meyer, there will be more losses in the pros. His worst season in college came in 2010 when the Gators finished 8-5. Despite the resources at hand, getting to eight wins in 2021 with the Jaguars is a stretch.

This has Bobby-Petrino-ditching-the-Falcons vibes written all over it.

Still, it’s Khan’s decision. Here’s hoping that Khan looks at more than just name value. Because this Jaguars job–which, again, isn’t open yet–would be perfect for Eric Bieniemy.

And Bieniemy would be perfect for the Jaguars.
