MVP CANDIDATES

Number 5 – Deshaun Watson, QB, Houston Texans

Deshaun Watson is about off this list and probably would be if a few more candidates were to step up. The 5-8 Broncos exploited the Texans last week, justifying the downgrade for Watson from last week. He threw two interceptions and a majority of his statistics came from garbage-time football after Denver got up 38-3 early in the third quarter.

The Case For

The Texans are still 8-5 and atop the AFC south. He is top-10 in virtually every passing statistic for the year and has good wins against the Chiefs and Patriots. Those are two very impressive wins and have to be accounted for. He has a chance to clinch the division in the coming weeks with two games against Tennessee.

The Case Against

Other than the obvious bad loss to Denver, Watson’s Texans could play their way out of the postseason if they are not careful. With two games against Tennessee and one against Tampa Bay remaining, they could lose all three.

While he is top-10 in a majority of passing statistics, he leads none and is not remotely close to doing so. He needs a lot of dominoes to fall in the last three weeks of the season to be in consideration for the league’s top individual award.

MVP Moment:

Week 5 vs. Falcons – 28/33, 426 yards passing, 5 passing touchdowns, win.

“Did he just do that?” Play:

35-yard shot to Kenny Stills in week 13 against the Patriots.
