Scenario 2: Jerry Jones Takes One for the League

The breakdown:

  • The London Chargers move to the NFC East.
  • The Arizona Cardinals move to the AFC West.
  • The Dallas Cowboys move to the NFC West.

This would all be dependent upon Cowboys owner Jerry Jones willing to move his franchise out of the NFC East and away from its glorified rivalries with the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Washington Redskins. Jones has done a lot of great things for the NFL since purchasing the Cowboys in 1989, but I don’t see him doing this, even if it would ease the Chargers’ move across the ocean.

Yet, let’s talk about it, because it’s not really so bad.

First, London’s new team not only switches countries but also conferences. This pits them against the aforementioned NFC East teams: Eagles, Giants, and Redskins. The London-Washington rivalry is especially intriguing as both cities are each nation’s capitals.

Now, it might seem just as easy to flip-flop the Chargers and Cowboys, but I wouldn’t go that far. After all, nothing is particularly easy when it comes to the NFL. But throwing in the Arizona Cardinals makes a fair amount of sense. And that’s because by moving the Cardinals to the AFC West, the Cowboys remain in the NFC.

The Cowboys would have a renewed rivalry with the San Francisco 49ers, a franchise it battled throughout the 1980s and early 1990s for NFC supremacy. And the Cowboys would also get a chance to regularly play in Los Angeles against the Rams in what will be league’s finest stadium.

In this scenario, the AFC West is the loser, but the Cardinals do have rookie quarterback Kyler Murray, who is more than holding his own this season. As he grows and develops, it could be similar situation as with the first scenario: Mahomes vs Murray on at least two occasions every season.

That’s a lot more exciting than Mahomes vs Old Man Rivers, at least.
