FREE AGENT OPTIONS

This is where it gets fun.

There are a lot of quarterbacks who are either about to hit the end of their contracts or they’re simply struggling with their current team and it’s time for both sides to part ways. Whatever the reason, here are the quarterbacks hitting free agency this offseason who the Chiefs could look at as a backup option.

This will not include guys like Cam Newton or Jameis Winston because most teams will see those guys as starters. The same could be said for our first free agent option, but here he is anyway.

ANDY DALTON

Say what you want about Andy Dalton‘s time in Cincinnati, but he’d be a solid option as a backup quarterback. He might even get some looks as a starter by teams this offseason, but by this point, he’s not an unquestioned starter wherever he goes.

With the Bengals sitting at 0-6 and being in their first year under Zac Taylor, it’s looking like it’ll be time for Dalton and the Bengals to part ways after nine years together. Yes, somehow Andy Dalton has been in the league for nine years already. Feels just like yesterday when I watched him in the Rose Bowl.

The tweet above shows that there are discussions about Dalton not even finishing the year with the Bengals. If he ends up on the open market this offseason, he’ll be one of the most coveted options at quarterback, but only a few teams would eye him as a starter.

This isn’t the most realistic option for Kansas City due to what Dalton would cost, but he’s a more realistic option than Newton or Winston. If the Chiefs are willing to outbid other teams for Dalton’s services, he’d be a great backup behind Mahomes.
