Drew Brees

While the NFL MVP award is not a lifetime achievement award, it would belong to the Saints’ Drew Brees if it were. It’s baffling, really, that the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards has never won an MVP award. Unfortunately for Brees, the phenomenal seasons that he’s put together were somehow always overshadowed by the eventual MVP winner.

Had Patrick Mahomes not put together one of the top three quarterback season performances ever, Brees likely would have been the MVP in 2018.

In 2019, Brees will again have the chance to challenge Mahomes as the top dog. Not only does Brees have one of the top coaches in the league, but the Saints also return as a mostly unchanged team from last year.

Much like the Chiefs, the Saints were only a play or two away from playing in the Super Bowl. Much like the Patriots’ Tom Brady, Brees is defining Father Time and doesn’t appear to be slowing down at age 40. Another run at the Super Bowl isn’t just possible, it could be very likely.

With superstars like running back Alvin Kamara and recently paid wide receiver Michael Thomas, Brees has pieces in place to put a lot of points on the board.

Just like the notoriety that Brees received in 2018 when he broke the all-time passing yards record, he could likely get the spotlight again in 2019 when/if he breaks the all-time passing touchdowns record. Both he and Brady are roughly 20 touchdowns away from breaking the record, which is nothing for an all-time great to surpass on a single season.

Breaking and/or setting that record in 2019 alone won’t get Brees the MVP award, but it will certainly cause him to get more MVP-like attention.

Could this finally be the year that one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game gets his first MVP? Only time will tell, but he’ll definitely give Mahomes a run for his money again this year.
