Jalin Burrell

Cornerback, New Mexico

There has been a lot of hype around fellow Chiefs UDFA Cornerback Mark Fields, but no one is talking about Jalin Burrell. That is unless you count Chiefs reporter BJ Kissel. Burrell was highlighted by Kissel as one of the five biggest takeaways of the day on both days one and day two of the three-day rookie minicamp.

Fields, the cornerback that most fans are excited about, wasn’t even mentioned in any of Kissel’s recaps. After Fields’ play in the National Championship game and with Burrell being the lesser known player out of the smaller school of New Mexico, it is understandable that Fields was the more exciting player right off the bat. After Burrell’s solid rookie mini-camp however, he deserves some excitement as well.

Burrell is a good story too. He went the JUCO route his first two years of college and earned a division one scholarship, but didn’t play with a great team even once he got to the division one level.

Being on a team that didn’t perform well and playing against lesser competition he slid out of the draft. He did do enough though to be signed as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs and continued to battle in rookie and impress in rookie minicamp.

Above are some of Burrell’s JUCO highlights. This was against lower level competition, but you can see flashes of his athleticism and coverage abilities. If he can bring this type of success to the next level he will be a great signing for the Chiefs.

Burrell does have his work cut out for him though. Even at a pretty weak position for the Chiefs, he has to battle with fellow rookies Mark Fields and sixth-round pick Rashaad Fenton for one or two spots more than likely.

He will have to have a great offseason and preseason to earn a roster spot. But nevertheless, after his great rookie minicamp, there needs to be more buzz about him amongst Chiefs fans.
