2018 NFL Draft: KC Kingdom Mock Draft

Round 1: Pick 1 – New York Giants (Cullen Jekel)

31. . Quarterback. Oklahoma. Kyler Murray. 1. player

After missing out on several promising quarterbacks in 2018 in favor of Saquon Barkley, the New York Giants decided to go all-in to get their quarterback of the future in Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray. Armed with the sixth and 17th picks of the first round, the Giants dealt both to Arizona to move up five spots to first overall.

Now the Giants finally have that promising young quarterback who can either sit behind and learn from Eli Manning in 2019, or battle him for the starting job from the start. Remember: when the Giants traded for Manning, he sat only a handful of games before taking over for the struggling Kurt Warner. Something similar could happen here.

Even after that big trade, the Giants will have ten more picks in the draft, including one pick in the second round (37), one in the third (95), two in the fourth and three in the fifth. This is a team with a lot of holes, but dealing two first rounders for the best quarterback prospect in the draft doesn’t harm the team from addressing further needs. 2019 may be a rough year, but now the Giants will be a team in the spotlight, much befitting an organization from New York.

Staff Reaction: I don’t understand this move for the Giants. With Beckham traded, the Giants have little depth at receiver and an offensive line that still struggles. The Giants can stay where they are and find a Lock or Haskins. Otherwise, adding in a strong defensive line draft (as the sixth pick did here) and/or add along the offensive line would have been a better decision.  – John
