Jermaine Kearse

While the Chiefs have really focused on improving the defense this offseason, the offense shouldn’t be neglected. Wide receiver Chris Conley left in free agency and is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. With a little uncertainty at the position, the Chiefs would be wise to inject some veteran talent here before the draft.

  • Aging and talented veterans like Michael Crabtree, Demaryius Thomas, and Mike Wallace could potentially add some value, but probably not as much as Jermaine Kearse would. The former Seattle Seahawk hasn’t been as noticeable in the last few seasons, playing for a bad New York Jets team. It’s likely that Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson, brought out the best in Kearse, much like Patrick Mahomes could and would in Kansas City.

Kearse would bring a veteran presence, but would still hopefully have a few good seasons left in him. He just turned 29 years old in February so a two-year contract wouldn’t be out of the question. His experience with winning a Super Bowl could also benefit the Chiefs as they move that direction this year.

While Kearse may not be a star receiver, he’s at least appears to be reliable, playing in 99 out of a possible 112 career games. Most of those missed games actually came in his rookie year in Seattle. So, while this wouldn’t be a flashy signing, it’d still be a solid one.

It’d be great to see the Chiefs add a young star wide receiver in the draft who could spend a season or two with Kearse’s veteran presence. While that player develops, it’d be fun to see both Kearse and Watkins both on the field while Mahomes throws perfectly placed balls to them.

Signing Kearse before the draft would help to solidify a position that is vitally important to the Chiefs young and uber-talented signal caller.
