Trading a Pick for a Player

It’s no secret that the Chiefs defense kept Kansas City out of the Super Bowl. Thankfully, defensive changes are happening swiftly in preparation for 2019. With a wide-open Super Bowl window, this would be the time for the Chiefs to swing for the fences.

In trading Marcus Peters last offseason, the Chiefs acquired a 2019 second round draft pick from the Los Angeles Rams. Since Brett Veach has two-second rounds picks at his disposal this year, he could use one of them as trade bait. That pick could be used to swipe Patrick Peterson away from the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals are in rebuild mode while the Chiefs are in win-now mode. The Cardinals could use the second round pick to build a team to their liking while the Chiefs could use the services of a highly talented cornerback in Peterson. Peterson will be 29 years old before the season starts so he’d basically be a rental for two to three years.

Thankfully, the three-time first-team All-Pro would upgrade the position and buy a little time to work some young players into the fold. Players like Kendall Fuller, Charvarius Ward, and Tremon Smith are young and could be molded into talented cornerbacks. The Chiefs may lose Steven Nelson to free agency so making a move at the position is a high priority.

Much like the Landon Collins and Steve Spagnuolo connection, Peterson also has a connection with the Chiefs new secondary coach, David Merritt. Merritt most recently coached the defensive backs with the Cardinals in 2018 and hopefully created a good relationship with Peterson during that time. It’s also worth noting that the 2018 Cardinals held Mahomes and the high-flying Chiefs offense to their season low of 26 points.

Giving up a second round pick isn’t ideal, but since the Chiefs have two this year, giving one up isn’t as big of a deal as it normally would be. A first or second round pick could still be used to select a defensive back in the upcoming draft. The second bold prediction is to trade a second-round draft pick for Patrick Peterson.
