COLDEST GAMES IN CHIEFS HISTORY – NUMBER 2

DECEMBER 18, 2016 VS TITANS (1°)

Just a few years ago, the Chiefs were rocking and rolling, but had themselves a horribly cold day game at Arrowhead late in the season. The Tennessee Titans were coming to town and the end result was one that Chiefs fans would rather not remember.

The Chiefs were neck and neck with the Raiders (not a typo) for who would win the AFC West and they needed every win they could get. Unfortunately, the week the Titans came to town resulted in the second coldest game in franchise history. It was barely above zero at kickoff.

Alex Smith did not have a good game (though it was very Alex Smith esque if we’re being honest), throwing for 163 yards and an interception. Marcus Mariota threw for 264 yards and was picked off once.

The Titans run game is what mostly killed the Chiefs that day (what else is new with these two teams?), as Demarco Murray totaled 89 yards and Derrick Henry had two scores with his legs. The Chiefs run game accounted for their only two touchdowns with Smith getting one and rookie Tyreek Hill getting the other.

This one came down to a last second Titans field goal in which Ryan Succop actually missed the first time. Andy Reid had called a timeout, however, and Succop then banged it through on the next attempt. It was a 53 yard attempt.

Most of us don’t want to remember this game, but it turns out that it was the second coldest game in the history of the Chiefs. So there you go.
