Defensive Line showed promise

Outside of defensive end Chris Jones last season, the defensive line was nonexistent. Kansas City replaced former defensive tackle Bennie Logan this offseason with Xavier Williams and rookie Derrick Nnadi. While Nnadi didn’t see the field in Thursday’s game, Williams showed some significant flashes against the Texans.

It seemed like every play that Williams was on the field there was a big push from the middle of the line. Williams was wreaking havoc for the Houston offensive line and forcing issues for the quarterback and running backs.

Chris Jones also showed off his abilities disrupting the backfield a few times. When Williams was on the field, and the Texans tried to run between the tackles, it was almost always stuffed around the line of scrimmage. In fact, the first third and short play for the Texans, Jones got into the backfield while Williams forced his way to the running lane making the stop.

If Williams can continue his great performance from Thursday into the regular season on a consistent basis, this defensive front will look much improved in 2018. Justin Houston and Chris Jones need someone else to force pressure in order to relieve some of the attention they have received in the absence of other help.
