BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

NOVEMBER 27, 2016 VS DENVER BRONCOS

The Chiefs and Broncos were both 7-3 and vying for the AFC West title when they met up in Denver in week 12 of the 2016 season. This game had so much hype that it was flexed into the Sunday Night Football slot that week. Both teams were locking it down defensively in the first quarter, but the Chiefs finally got on the board in the second quarter.

A safety (thanks to Justin Houston) and an 86-yard kickoff return by Tyreek Hill gave the Chiefs a 9-3 lead heading into the half. While it was exciting to see KC up at the half, Denver was a place where the Chiefs had struggled to win at over the years. Fans were hoping this would be their second straight win in the Mile High city.

At one point, the Broncos led 24-16 and the Chiefs looked like they were going to let the Broncos get the best of them once again. Instead, Alex Smith marched the Chiefs down the field with three minutes left on the clock and tied the game.

From there, overtime ensued and it honestly looked like the game would end in a tie. Both teams connected with field goals on their first offensive drive, but after that, it was sudden death. Broncos kicker Brandon McManus missed a 62 yard field goal and the Chiefs had the opportunity to “walk it off” with barely over a minute left.

With the ball on Denver’s side of the field, Smith did just enough to get the Chiefs within Cairo Santos’ field goal range. As he lined up to kick the hopeful game winning score, Chiefs fans everywhere were nervous as hell.

For a good chunk of the kick, it looked as though the ball was going to go wide and that the two would tie. Instead, the ball barely made it through the uprights and the Kansas City Chiefs moved to 8-3 on the year.

  • Smith went 26 of 44 for 220 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked six times.
  • Tyreek Hill had the game of his life, rushing for a touchdown, catching a touchdown, and returning a kickoff to the house. He was the first guy to do so since Gale Sayers did so back in the day.
  • Demetrius Harris caught the two-point conversion to send the game to overtime.
  • Trevor Siemian had a good day for Denver, throwing for 368 yards and three touchdowns. He was sacked five times.
  • Justin Houston, in one of his few games played in 2016, recorded three sacks, including the safety on Siemian in the second quarter.

This was a fun game for many reasons. Obviously it was great beating the Broncos, but the Chiefs really fought hard to come back in this game. In years past, the Chiefs always let Denver get them best of them and we all were probably thinking this was going to be another game resulting in that. Instead, they battled back and were victorious in the Mile High city.
