ALL-TIME LEADERS IN RUSHING YARDS – NUMBER 14: RICK BERNS (2,704)

Nebraska Running Back from 1976-1978

Rick Berns had just one 1,000 yard season while at Nebraska, but he was able to put up over 700 yards in each of his first two years. One of the most impressive stats for Berns was that he never recorded less than nine touchdowns in a single season.

Berns finished his three-year Husker career with 493 carries for 2,704 yards and 31 touchdowns. His best season came in 1978, when he had 183 carries for 1,032 yards and 11 touchdowns. That 1978 season saw the Huskers go 9-3 and tie for the Big 8 title.

Berns was a third round pick in the 1979 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’d play for the Bucs for two years before spending another two with the Los Angeles Raiders and winning a Super Bowl with them.

While Berns’ NFL stats weren’t all that impressive, he still managed to come away with a Super Bowl ring. That on top of his 2,704 yard rushing yards at Nebraska make Rick Berns a successful football player and he sits 14th all-time in rushing yards to this day.
