KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

The Chiefs are obviously in a great position. They’ve traded Smith and got a great deal in return, plus they have Patrick Mahomes ready to take the wheel.

Mahomes only appeared in one game in 2017, the season finale in Denver, where he looked very good. The former Texas Tech gunslinger threw for 284 yards and an interception in his NFL debut. He made some throws that were just absolutely incredible and gave fans a nice glimpse of what is to come.

Now, it’s worth noting that the game against the Broncos was just one game, and it was against a Denver team that probably didn’t care anymore. Still, Mahomes did all of that with backup talent at his disposal. That’s promising for sure.

If [Mahomes] pans out, the Chiefs will have arguably the best situation at quarterback in not only the AFC West, but the entire National Football League.

Mahomes is still unknown, but that’s kind of exciting, isn’t it? Smith was a very boring quarterback (and don’t get me wrong, I loved Alex Smith while he was here), but Mahomes is the complete opposite. He’s going to throw more picks than Smith did, but that’s to be expected with the type of player that Mahomes is.

The Kansas City Chiefs probably won’t be as highly thought of heading into 2018 due to the unknown that is Mahomes as a full-time starter and that’s not surprising. If he pans out, however, the Chiefs will have arguably the best situation at quarterback in not only the AFC West, but the entire National Football League. That’s something none of us have been able to say, possibly ever in our lifetimes.

As for the backup quarterback in Kansas City, free agency and the draft will help us figure that out. I covered some options for the Chiefs and the one I’m highest on is bringing Chase Daniel back to Kansas City. He knows the system and is used to being a backup. He’d be the perfect guy to have behind Mahomes.

For the time being, however, it’s just nice to know that the KC Chiefs have their franchise guy… finally.
