WORST MOMENTS FOR MU FANS – NUMBER 5: WE GOT SCREWED!

2007 FOOTBALL SEASON

The 2007 season was an exciting one for college football junkies in the Kansas City area. Not only were the Missouri Tigers once again contenders, but the Kansas Jayhawks were in the thick of things as well.

When the two faced off in their annual Border War game at Arrowhead Stadium, the Jayhawks were the second ranked team in the country while Missouri was ranked third. Whoever won this game would be facing Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game and would likely have a BCS bowl game waiting for them at the end of the season.

Missouri went on to win the game by a score of 36-28. It looked like MU would destroy the Jayhawks early on, but KU battled back to make a game of and put up 21 points in the fourth quarter. It wouldn’t be enough though and Missouri would take the win and the Big 12 North title.

Missouri was the better team in 2007 and proved it by beating Kansas.

Well, Mizzou would go on to lose to Oklahoma in the championship game (they got absolutely curb stomped by the Sooners) and what happened next will stick with MU fans forever. Despite beating the Kansas Jayhawks just weeks prior, the Tigers were gipped out of the Orange Bowl, which was given to the Jayhawks.

Kansas would win the Orange Bowl, something their fans still brag about to this day. While Missouri went on to win the Cotton Bowl, an appearance in the Orange Bowl was what all MU fans knew should have been theirs. Instead they had to watch their arch rivals not only be in it, but win it.

Missouri was the better team in 2007 and proved it by beating Kansas. The Tigers were ultimately punished for making it to the Big 12 Championship Game and that’s a little ridiculous.

It’s been over a decade since this occurred and Missouri fans are still bitter about it. Hey, at least our football team has made a bowl game the last few years though, right?
