Kansas City Chiefs: Replacing Bob Sutton

#8 Mike Vrabel: Defensive Coordinator – Texans

I know that in the eyes of many Kansas City Chiefs fans, Mike Vrabel is the top name. However, I’m pumping the brakes on this for a couple of reasons. Yes, Vrabel has done fairly well for himself in Houston. He is certainly a guy that is getting a lot of national attention. I’m just not so sure he’s what we want.

My first big issue here is that the Texans defense is very dependent on JJ Watt. That’s understandable, given his talent. However, if we aren’t letting Bob Sutton claim injury to Eric Berry as an excuse, why does Mike Vrabel get a pass for JJ Watt? Seems like a double standard we don’t want to make.

The other problem is that Mike Vrabel is already a defensive coordinator. That means the Chiefs would have to make him a huge offer that is just short of naming him head coach. I don’t see Andy Reid doing that for a guy that isn’t coming from his coaching tree. Mike Vrabel might be the “sexy” name, but that doesn’t make him the right one.
