Truth be told, I didn’t know a lot about this Kansas City soccer star before looking into him. I’d heard the name and that he was good. However, I just kind of thought this was one of those racially-based nicknames that are usually in bad taste. After looking into him though, I’ll admit my first impression of Jimmy Nielsen was wrong.

Yes, he’s a white guy…but it’s the fact that he’s a pale white guy with platinum blonde hair that makes this name work. On top of that, he was a pretty good goalie as well. His ability to pounce on the ball (hey, that’s why they said “Puma”!) was absolutely impressive.

Jimmy Nielsen was a key component of Sporting KC’s championship run in 2013. The veteran goalkeeper provided a reliable last line of defense for SKC. He earned his nickname through his ability as a player…though yes, the racial thing does come into play a bit.
