PATRICK MAHOMES. A. The Chiefs got their quarterback of the future.. QB. Texas Tech

While some analysts might think that the Kansas City Chiefs gave up way too much to acquire a guy who likely won’t even play in 2017, I see it differently. The Chiefs traded up 17 spots to draft a player that they really liked in the draft process.

With rumblings that teams like the Saints, Cardinals, and Texans were all interested in grabbing Patrick Mahomes if given the chance, John Dorsey and Andy Reid knew what they had to do, and they did it. In my opinion, it’s hard to fault that decision.

The Chiefs haven’t been an aggressive team in past drafts, but they flipped the script on that this season and went after their guy. In return, they did give up a first rounder for next year’s draft, but the Chiefs should have another good year in 2017 and that will push them near the end of the first round anyway. Plus, they can always trade back into the first if need be.

I’m never going to fault the Kansas City Chiefs for going after a quarterback that they really like. I just wish they’d been doing that over the past three decades!
