People shared smiles, laughter, conversation, or even a friendly nod of approval with anyone and everyone who was willing to talk about the Royals. Peace on earth and good will towards men existed if only for a few fleeting moments within the bubble that is Kansas City.

I watched with adrenaline surging with my friends in Colorado in 2014. They all took on the role of Royals’ fans by association. Watching the love for the Royals spread even beyond our great little city was incredible.

I kicked myself all year in 2015 for not coming home to experience firsthand the culture and the excitement. I knew it was an opportunity that rarely presents itself.

That Royals team didn’t disappoint and I didn’t miss my shot in 2015. I came home to watch the games with my family and the first Royals’ fans I’d ever known. Night after night, the Royals did something to get us out of our seats in celebration.

As a coach of a team that was put together based on furthering their skills rather than winning trophies, I was elated to point to a perennial underdog who also happened to be my favorite team as an example for what to do right.
