While these rankings may drop after a visit to Waco against undefeated Baylor on Saturday, the Jayhawks defense is showing it can keep the team in games.

After a 55-6 trouncing of FCS foe Rhode Island, Kansas held three of its next four opponents at or below their season average in points per game.

After a woeful special teams year a season ago, Kansas Jayhawks football rank third in kickoff returns with an average of 24.3.

The experience a completely inexperienced defense received last season is starting to pay off. Brandon Stewart picked off TCU quarterback Kenny Hill twice last week, and the Jayhawks are fourth in the country in tackles for a loss per game at 9.6.

Even an undersized offensive line is improving, ranking third in the Big 12 allowing just 2.2 sacks per game.

But that’s where the positives stop.
