. . OVERALL DEFENSE. C.

Had this game ended at the first half, every single person on the Kansas City Chiefs would have gotten an F from me. It was an embarrassing first half and I really wanted to go cry in my room for the rest of the day.

The defense was really, really, really awful in the first half. Peters was getting torched by Rivers, and Keenan Allen was getting into the second year vet’s head. After Allen was injured in the third quarter, everything changed for the defense.

Had it not been for a miserable first half, this defense would have really impressed me. And had it not been for a great second half, this defense would have crushed me.

The Kansas City defense went on to allow only three points in the game and Dee Ford even had a sack on Rivers. Dee Ford! “The Bust” that the Chiefs took over any good wide receivers in 2014 did something that benefitted the Chiefs, and he didn’t run away from anyone!

The first half defense got an F, second half got an A. I’d give the pass rush a D because aside from that Ford sack, there was NO pressure on the quarterback all day. Fortunately, Ford got that sack so we can all get a free Big Mac on Monday. Phew. I was really concerned about that.

The secondary allowed Rivers to throw for 243 yards and a touchdown. They settled in in the second half and Phillip Gaines actually made some pretty nice plays out there. He showed that he could be a great player for the Chiefs. I’d give the secondary a C+.

The run defense was not good. They allowed Melvin Gordon (San Diego’s version of Dee Ford) to rush for two touchdowns early, both the first of his career, and he rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries on the day. Danny Woodhead had 89 yards on 16 carries. The run defense gets a D+.

Had it not been for a miserable first half, this defense would have really impressed me. And had it not been for a great second half, this defense would have crushed me.
