Third: 2014 ALCS Game Four – The Catch

Alex Gordon is known for his glove as much as he’s known for his late game heroics. While he’s made a ton of great plays in the outfield, or in the stands at U.S. Cellular Field, his catch in game four of the 2014 ALCS tops his best defensive plays.

It may not have been as spectacular as his diving catch into the stands, or when he guns out a runner who’s trying to test his arm, but it was an important play to the team.

While the fifth inning of this game turned out to be uneventful as the Orioles would go in order, things could have been very different if not for this Gordon catch:

The Royals only led by a single run in this inning and Alex Gordon saved a lead-off double to open the fifth inning. While the next two batters struck out, the situation could have played out differently with a runner on second base and nobody out.

As Alex Gordon crashed into the fence, fans rushed their hands to their heads as their jaws hit the ground. Meanwhile, Royals’ hats shot into the air to acknowledge a great play.
