Round 1 – Pick 28: Cody Whitehair, Offensive Line (Kansas State)

Not only was Cody Whitehair the best player available when the 28th pick of this mock draft rolled around, he also fills a potential position of need. It also allows the KC Chiefs to draft a player that’s close to home.

Jeff Allen is a free agent and was graded as one of the best offensive guards in the league by ProFootballFocus. He may require a hefty contract so the Chiefs could look to go with a cheaper alternative.

Ben Grubbs was hurt most of last season so there’s no guarantee he’ll be ready to play the majority of the snaps this season. Zach Fulton performed very well for the Chiefs, but Jah Reid is not someone that should see regular playing time.

Cody Whitehair Combine Results

  • 40 Yard Dash: 5.08 seconds
  • Bench Press: 16 reps
  • Broad Jump: 110 inches
  • Three Cone Drill: 7.32 seconds
  • 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.58 seconds

Whitehair was the seventh best offensive linemen in both the 40 yard dash and the broad jump. He took eighth in the 20 yard shuttle and was considered a top performer in the three cone drill.

Here’s what NFL.com has to say about Whitehair:

"He has the confidence and talent to start right away and his run blocking should improve as he gets more comfortable firing out from a three-point stance. Whitehair has the ability to be a very good starter with a ceiling that could reach the all-pro level."

Their comparison pick for Cody Whitehair is Zack Martin. He’s been an All-Pro himself so the Chiefs could certainly do worse.
