Pros

Ian Kennedy is only 31 years old. That’s not young, but that’s also not old. He didn’t have a great season last year so he might be available on a shorter contract of 2-3 years, rather than demanding a long term contract.

He’s not as attractive as other free agent starters, but he would seem to be a decent mid-rotation to back end starter for the Royals.

Dayton Moore has hit on free agent pitchers looking to increase their value in recent years and Kennedy might be in that position. His stat line over the last five years includes a 3.89 ERA and a 3.87 FIP. That basically means his ERA is a pretty accurate reflection of what he can do. It hasn’t been increased or decreased due to defense or ballpark metrics.

He averages 8.5 K’s/9 in that time and carries a 3.29 K/BB ratio. He’s also pitched an average of 196 innings in that span. His durability may help offer some relief to a bullpen that while dominant, still needs it’s rest.

He’s not as attractive as other free agent starters, but he would seem to be a decent mid-rotation to back end starter for the Royals. If nothing else, he brings a veteran presence and the ability to eat up innings.
