Royals Rumors: Royals Should Not Make Huge Trade

I’ll admit initially when the starting rotation was struggling early on that I was all for the Royals trading for a big time ace, like a Johnny Cueto or a Cole Hamels. As time has gone on though, I’ve begun to gain confidence in this rotation. At least enough to the point where I don’t think we need a Cueto or a Hamels.

Edinson Volquez is clutch, and as I wrote about recently, is the ace of the rotation. You know he’s going to give you a quality start almost every time he’s slated to take the mound. If he’s the ace of the team, why trade for one?

  • Chris Young likes to give up homers and is starting to falter a little, but he’s still been a solid pick-up. If the Royals did decide to seek out a new starting pitcher, Young would probably the odd man out of the rotation.

Jeremy Guthrie is Jeremy Guthrie. You know he’ll give up runs, and fans aren’t really too thrilled whenever Guthrie is set to start. His outing on Friday evening against the Astros wasn’t great, but Guthrie should remain in the rotation, according to Mark Kanter (and I happen to agree). You have to admit that he’s much better than a lot of other teams’ number four or five guys in the rotation.

Danny Duffy struggled at the beginning of the year, but has been terrific since coming off the disabled list.

The only big question mark to me at this point is Yordano Ventura, who was supposed to be the ace of the staff, but instead has strongly disappointed. Ventura was sent down to Triple-A Omaha for less than 24 hours and we’ve yet to see him in action since then. Maybe the brief demotion will ignite a spark in him, but I don’t know. None of us do.

If Ventura can get back to his World Series form, then a trade at all might not even be necessary, but that’s a whole other story.
