Play Calling

The monsoon storm in Oakland might have been a reason for the Chiefs’ poor play calling on Thursday night. Nothing was working for the Chiefs, yet they kept calling questionable plays in crucial times and it was annoying to watch.

For one, Alex Smith threw 36 times. I get that’s probably because the Chiefs were down 14-0 at one point, but still. Smith was throwing the ball a lot even when it was still tied at zero.

The part of the game that REALLY grinded my gears though was when the Chiefs lucked out with the Raiders muffing a punt. Kansas City had the football in Oakland territory, ran the ball once and then threw from the four yard line twice. What? Why? I get maybe on third down, but you have Jamaal Charles as your running back. He probably would have gotten into the end zone on second and goal.

Not getting a touchdown there was obviously a huge blow. The Chiefs had to settle for a field goal, which killed them in the end. Had the Chiefs gotten a touchdown at this point, the game would have been tied in the end with that late Oakland touchdown.
