September 28th, 1997: Chiefs Win In Overtime, 20-17

The Chiefs were hosting the Seahawks for the first time that season and Seattle had a new weapon for them, quarterback Warren Moon. Formerly of the Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings, Moon had put together some seasons that were to remember and Seattle was excited to have him as their new guy. o

He didn’t disappoint in this one either when he got on the board first with a 41 yard touchdown pass to Joey Galloway, giving the Hawks the 7-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first quarter. The Seahawks would also add a Todd Peterson field goal from 44 yards out, giving them the 10 point advantage.

If the Chiefs and Seahawks take it to overtime this weekend, it will mark for the third time these two have met outside of regulation.

However, the Chiefs wouldn’t be denied when Marcus Allen was able to punch his first touchdown of the day from 8 yards out, making it a 10-7 game at the half. The Chiefs would open up the scoring in the third quarter with another goal line score from Allen, this time from the one yard line.

The Chiefs held the lead for barley two minutes, as Moon connected on a 54 yard touchdown pass to James McKnight, putting the Hawks back on top, 17-14.

The score stayed the same until late in the fourth quarter, when the Chiefs rallied for a tying field goal from Pete Stoyanovich field goal that forced the game into overtime. This was only the second time that these two team would face in overtime and it has been the last as well.

After each team had two possessions in overtime, the Chiefs were finally able to seal the deal on a 41 yard Pete Stoyanovich field goal making the final score, 20-17. This was easily one of the best games these two teams had played in and it featured Hall of Fame players all over the field.
