My co-editor, Leigh Oleszack covered Houston making the countdown, and she put it perfectly.

"Justin Houston has been with the Chiefs for three seasons (he will be entering his fourth year in 2014) and was an absolute beast on the defensive side of the ball last year. The Chiefs had a great defense in 2013 (well for the first half of the season anyway) and it’s no wonder that the two Kansas City players named to the countdown so far both come from the defensive side. Houston made the countdown last year, appearing at number 49. He more than likely dropped a few spots due to an elbow injury that caused him to miss five games. Had Houston remained healthy the entire year, he probably would have been the second highest rated Chief (after Jamaal Charles, of course). Houston’s 2013 stats consisted of 40 tackles, 11 sacks, five defended passes, three recovered fumbles, and one forced fumble."

Houston was on a run that made him the early favorite for the NFL’s defensive player of the year award. Had he stayed healthy, we might be talking about two KC Chiefs in the top 15 players as opposed to just one.

The Chiefs and Houston are currently in a contract negotiation, as the 4th year stud has been holding out since the beginning of OTA’s. Hopefully, the Chiefs can get a deal done before camp, though it’s looking like he could miss the first couple of practices. The Chiefs HAVE to get this deal done and I’m confident they will soon.
