NUMBER 4: Hello Arrowhead Stadium

Game: Chiefs vs. Bills, Week 6

Date: October 7th, 1991

Many claim this to be the night that Arrowhead became what it’s known as today. At this point, the Bills were in the midst of their four in-a-row Super Bowl run and had the number two ranked offense in the NFL. Kansas City was in year three of Marty Schottenheimer and was looking to establish their identity.

The NFL rewarded Kansas City with their first home Monday Night Football game in 8 years and the Chiefs did NOT disappoint.

In the first half, it was a sloppy game for both teams as the Chiefs entered half time with a 13-6 lead. Both teams dealt with turnovers from their best players and neither team could get into a rhythm.

However, things changed dramatically in the second half but only for the Chiefs. Running backs, Christian Okoye and Harvey Williams, both finished the game with 100 yards rushing and Okoye scored two second half touchdowns. The Bills entered the game with 24th ranked rushing defense and had no answer for the Chiefs very vanilla style offense.

What really exploded that Arrowhead crowd was a stellar performance from Derrick Thomas (go figure) with his four sacks in the game. Bill Maas accounted for two as well and the Chiefs went on to destroy the Bills, 33-6. The Chiefs defense held one of the greatest offenses to just 6 points the entire game.

This was the showcase game to the world that, the Chiefs had a dominating defense building and that Arrowhead was going to be one of the toughest places to play from here on out.

This game makes my list because of it’s consideration as the beginning for an era in Chiefs football.
