Chiefs: Scott Pioli

Okay, this is the part where I cheat a little bit.

It is amazing how much pain and suffering one man can cause a single organization even after he leaves.

Think about how good the Chiefs are now – 10-3 and a game out of the one seed in the AFC – and how little has change to the core of the team. John Dorsey and Andy Reid added a couple of corners and got a quarterback that doesn’t completely suck. Viola, the Chiefs don’t suck anymore. That’s essentially all that has changed to the organization personnel-wise in terms of major contributors and the team is one of the best in the AFC.

Imagine if Pioli had swallowed his pride and found a better quarterback and head coach two years ago? Let’s say before 2012 he had hired Chuck Pagano or Bruce Arians and used his third round pick to select Russell Wilson instead of Donald Stephenson? Hell, what if Pioli in 2012 Pioli just selected the players that went one pick after his pick in the first three rounds of 2012?

2012 Pioli Pick — Very Next Selection

Dontari Poe — Fletcher Cox
Jeff Allen — Alshon Jeffery
Donald Stephenson — Russell Wilson

Those three picks alone save Pioli’s job even if he still hires Romeo Crennel.

Other notable shortly after picks:

Dexter McCluster -six picks- Rob Gronkowski
Jon Asamoah -next pick- Jared Veldheer
Tony Moeaki -two picks- Jimmy Graham
Ricky Stanzi -next pick- Anthony Sherman (just thought that was funny)

Here’s a question to ponder: Would the Chiefs had been better off if they had just immediately traded their pick for the player selected after them? Because the quick answer may be yes. Pioli was so bad that the random players immediately selected after his draft picks were collectively better than his own. Seems stunning to me.
